Numbers
2x4: A standard type of building wood generally measuring 2 inches wide by 4 inches depth and usually 8 feet in length (although other lengths are available). Note: the actual finished dimensions are exactly one quarter inch less than stated: hince, one and 3/4 inches by three and 3/4 inches. Normally used for framing walls, etc. Sometimes called Studs, or Sticks / available in several grades, untreated or pressure treated.
2x6: Same as above but measuring 2 inches wide by 6 inches depth.
2x8: Same as above but measuring 2 inches wide by 8 inches depth.
2x10: Same as above but measuring 2 inches wide by 10 inches depth.
2x12: Same as above but measuring 2 inches wide by 12 inches depth.
4x4: A standard type of building wood generally measuring 4 inches wide by 4 inches depth and usually 8 or more feet in length. Note: the actual finished dimensions are exactly three and 3/4 inches by three and 3/4 inches. Normally used for deck rail uprights, heavy frameing, etc. Sometimes called Posts / available in several grades, untreated or pressure treated.
6x6: A standard type of building wood generally measuring 6 inches wide by 6 inches depth and usually 10 or more feet in length. Note: the actual finished dimensions are exactly five and 3/4 inches by five and 3/4 inches. Normally used for deck supports, etc. Sometimes called Posts "heavy or big"/ available in several grades, normally pressure treated.
10 baseT: A standard type of communications wire used for high-speed computer networking, contains 4 pair (8 wires in total), also called CAT5, or LAN wire.
